[76518] Deadlock in Washington: Israel-Lebanon talks held in the shadow of severe military escalation
Contacts in the shadow of fire: Security talks in Washington
Over the past weekend, military delegations from Israel and Lebanon gathered in Washington for "security track" talks, mediated by the Trump administration. According to RFI Farsi, the talks are being held in the shadow of repeated violations of the ceasefire that came into effect on April 17, with both sides blaming each other for the escalation.
Sources identified with a pro-Iranian line and Hezbollah, including Khabar Fouri and Akharin Khabar, report that the talks have reached a deadlock. According to these reports, the Lebanese delegation demanded an immediate ceasefire and an end to Israeli military activity, but were met with refusal from Israel, which conditioned any arrangement on the "disarmament of Hezbollah" and refused to withdraw from territories in Lebanon.
At the same time, Iran International reports that in parallel with the diplomacy in Washington, the IDF has increased its aerial activity. According to the channel's data, over 800 airstrikes have been carried out in the last 40 days across Lebanon, with the rate of strikes in the last two weeks increasing to approximately 47 strikes per day.
Al Arabiya Farsi noted that on Thursday, an Israeli airstrike was carried out in the Dahiyeh district of Beirut, the second time since the declaration of the ceasefire. These are preparatory talks ahead of a broader political discussion scheduled to be held on June 2. While the Lebanese side is focusing on the demand for a ceasefire, it appears that Israel continues to adhere to a policy of increased military pressure on the organization's infrastructure.
