In the Ukrainian public discourse, assessments casting doubt on an imminent end to the war are growing, while public figures are calling to avoid peace agreements and elections in the near future.
Pessimistic assessments of the future of the war in Ukraine
In a series of publications that flooded Ukrainian Telegram channels on May 30, 2026, alarming assessments regarding the duration of the war emerged. The figure of social and political activist Dmytro Korchynsky was at the center of the discussion, after being quoted in several channels, including Реальна Війна | Україна | Новини, Україна Online, and Новини: Україна, as estimating that "the war will last another 500 years."
As part of his stance, according to his words reported in Батальйон «Монако», Korchynsky advises the leadership and citizens of Ukraine to refrain from signing any future peace agreement, claiming that Moscow will continue to pose a threat as long as it exists. Additionally, he called for suspending elections in Ukraine, arguing that "we always do it badly."
Additional channels that disseminated the remarks include Україна Сьогодні, ukrain1an ꑭ news, and Ху Київ +, which are mostly identified with a clear pro-Ukrainian stance emphasizing national resilience and sharp criticism of Russia and Putin. The channels emphasize that these are assessments by social activists that integrate with certain feelings of fatigue among the public, but also with a determination to continue the fighting.
At the same time, a platform was given to another angle by political commentator Vitaly Portnikov in Ху Київ +, who presented a more moderate but still pessimistic assessment, according to which the war could continue into the 2030s. It is evident that the public discourse is now focused on the tension between the desire for the war to end and the fear of political and diplomatic consequences of rash moves.
