Political embarrassment in Turkey: Denials surrounding the CHP rally
In the last 24 hours, a storm has developed surrounding claims that the Republican People's Party (CHP) officially appealed to the Governor of Ankara with a request to cancel the planned rally of the party chairman, Özgür Özel. Son Dakika Haberler Gündem and Son Dakika Haberler Türkiye reported emphatically that the party had submitted an official request to cancel the event.
The initial reports raised questions regarding the party's stability, with suspicions even arising that associates of the former chairman, Kemal Kılıçdaroğlu, were behind the move. GündemX initially published that "Kılıçdaroğlu's administration submitted a request to the Governor of Ankara to cancel Özgür Özel's rally."
However, the CHP leadership was quick to deny these claims entirely. Atakan Sönmez, Kılıçdaroğlu's media advisor, clarified unequivocally that "The CHP administration has no request to the Governor of Ankara to ban the rally that will take place tomorrow at Güvenpark". Also, in a conversation with the tv100 channel, officials at the party headquarters emphasized that the reports about an attempt to cancel are false.
The gap between the initial reports and the official denials points to internal struggles within the Turkish media and within the main opposition party, as media outlets identified with the "Breaking News" stream were forced to deal with a narrative that was officially denied by party officials.
