A heavy wave of floods in Turkey and Syria
Extremely stormy weather has been hitting the region in the last 24 hours, with heavy rains and hail causing significant damage in Turkey and Syria.
State of emergency in northeastern Syria
According to Sputnik Türkiye, the source identified with the positions of the Russian government, a state of emergency has been declared in the northeastern region of Syria. In Sputnik's report, it was noted that following increased water flow from Turkey and heavy rains, the level of the Euphrates River reached a "critical" level. As a result, water was released from the Tabqa Dam for the first time since 1988 to balance the level. The Syrian Ministry of Defense ordered an urgent evacuation of residents and dispatched special forces to the area.
Damages in Turkey
In Turkey, several provinces are dealing with the consequences of the extreme weather:
- In the Manisa province, heavy rains and hail caused local flooding, according to Sputnik Türkiye.
- In the cities of Hatay and Osmaniye, the situation is even more complex. According to Haber Gündem, streams overflowed their banks, retaining walls collapsed, and houses were completely flooded with floodwater according to the source's report.
National forecast
TGRT HABER reports that the Turkish State Meteorological Service has issued a "yellow code" alert for 76 provinces across the country, with expectations of a drop in temperatures and continued heavy rains. This is a widespread weather event that puts the region's infrastructure to a significant test.
