[74037] Ceasefire agreement between the US and Iran in question: New sanctions on oil shipments
Reports of an agreement in principle to extend the ceasefire by 60 days between Washington and Tehran, alongside the imposition of new US sanctions on Iranian oil tankers.
Diplomatic tension: A 60-day ceasefire on the table
A source in the US administration told NTD News Hebrew that a memorandum of understanding in principle has been reached to extend the ceasefire between the US and Iran by another 60 days. According to the report, the goal of the move is to allow room for negotiations on the Iranian nuclear program, with the deal currently awaiting President Donald Trump's final approval.
The report on the agreement, which also received additional confirmation from News in Real Time, comes in the shadow of reports of mutual attacks. The US Central Command clarified that recent Iranian actions, which include drone launches in the Strait of Hormuz and missile launches toward Kuwait, constitute "blatant violations of the ceasefire."
Parallel to the diplomatic efforts, the US Department of the Treasury announced economic punitive measures. According to NTD News Hebrew, sanctions were imposed on eight ships, including the tankers "Flora", "Honkiu", and "El Gape", due to their involvement in transporting Iranian crude oil.
US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent clarified the rationale behind the step: "We will not allow the Iranian government to increase its oil revenues for the purpose of rebuilding its armed forces and military capabilities." This is a move that raises questions regarding the stability of the emerging agreement, as it is being implemented despite reports of understandings to lift movement restrictions in the Strait of Hormuz.
