During the night between Wednesday and Thursday (May 28, 2026), a series of powerful explosions was reported in the eastern part of the city of Bandar Abbas, Iran. Local residents reported at least three to four explosions that occurred around 01:30, and noted that air defense systems in the area were activated in response.

Simultaneously, official sources in the United States confirmed to the Reuters news agency that the US military carried out new airstrikes against an Iranian military site, which was defined as a "threat to American forces and to freedom of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz." According to reports, the US military also succeeded in intercepting and downing a number of Iranian unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs).

Conversely, media outlets affiliated with the Iranian regime, including Fars News Agency, confirmed the sound of the explosions but stated that the source and the precise target remain under investigation. In videos and reports distributed on social media, including on Vahid Online, the activation of air defenses in the city was mentioned. Channels close to the Revolutionary Guards claimed that Iran had worked in recent days to intercept and shoot down American and Israeli aircraft in the area, including RQ-9 and F-35 models.

Against this backdrop, the Iranian Ministry of Intelligence published a stern statement warning against a "combined war" led by the US and Israel, which includes exerting economic pressure, cyber warfare, and attempts to destabilize internal stability. The statement came simultaneously with the remarks of the deputy political commander of the Revolutionary Guards Navy, who threatened that "from Chabahar to Mahshahr" they will turn into a "graveyard for American invaders" (as reported by DW Farsi).

Sources in the United States noted that the tension comes after intelligence agencies identified hostile activity by Iran, including attempts by speedboats to mine the Strait of Hormuz and the launch of UAVs toward American warships. Despite this, Ali Bagheri-Kani, a senior official in the Supreme National Security Council, stated that indirect contacts with Washington are continuing and that Iran is working to formulate a new mechanism for the passage of ships in the Strait of Hormuz.
