[62771] U.S. has revoked sanctions waiver on Russian oil purchases
U.S. tightens sanctions on Russian oil imports
The U.S. Department of the Treasury announced on Saturday that it would not renew the sanctions waiver that allowed various countries, including India, to purchase Russian oil. The report, which was circulated by numerous news agencies including IRNA News Agency and Daneshjoo News Agency, notes that this is a significant shift in Washington's energy policy.
According to a report by Reuters, the waiver in question had previously been extended for a period of only one month, with the intention of compensating for the "shortage in oil supply and high prices" caused by Iran's blockade of the Strait of Hormuz. Now, according to U.S. Secretary of the Treasury Scott Bessent, the administration has decided to end this policy and will no longer allow purchases of Russian oil stored on tankers.
While Western sources focus on the economic and logistical aspects of energy prices, Iranian media outlets affiliated with the establishment, including the IRGC Telegram channel and IRNA, presented the move as part of the broader implications of the geopolitical situation, while combining the report with rhetoric critical of U.S. policy.
