According to bpthaber, a citizen who received a phone call on behalf of the agency with the notification that they had been selected as the "family of the year," chose to decline participation in the survey and hang up the phone. In response, a financial fine of 18,991 Turkish Lira was imposed on them. bpthaber notes that according to the Turkish Statistics Law No. 5429, participation in TÜİK surveys is a legal obligation.
