[61302] The 78th Nakba Day Storm: Exchange of Accusations on Social Media
The 78th Nakba Day: Polarized Discourse on Social Media
Marking the 78th anniversary of the Nakba, social media platforms have become an arena for a sharp clash of narratives. On one hand, activists and prominent figures, including Jeremy Corbyn, attacked Britain and Israel, claiming they are responsible for the "expulsion of 800,000 Palestinians" and that a "genocide in Gaza" is currently taking place. Corbyn described the events as "78 years of British complicity in crimes" (source).
Conversely, users identified with right-wing positions strongly rejected the Palestinian narrative. The user VerminusM compared Nakba Day to a "German day of mourning for losing World War II," and claimed it is a Palestinian refusal "to learn from past failures" (source). The same user even welcomed the elimination of a senior Hamas official in Gaza as a way "to celebrate Nakba Day" (source).
At the same time, debates have developed around the legal aspects of the current fighting. Users such as TC_and_Hounds argued that the Prosecutor of the International Criminal Court (ICC) has found no evidence of genocide in Gaza (source), a claim that stands in direct contradiction to statements by activists such as Bragamias, who define the reality in Gaza as an "apartheid regime" continuing a policy of erasure (source).
The discourse also included calls by Palestinian activists for recognition of the right of return (source), alongside counter-responses from users who called on Arab nations to absorb Palestinian refugees and grant them citizenship, similar to other conflicts around the world (source).
