Legal storm in Ukraine: Driver fined for damage caused to her vehicle by a pothole

A controversial ruling in the Precarpathia and Zakarpattia regions has sparked outrage on Ukrainian social media. According to reports on various channels, including Труха⚡️Україна and Україна Online, a Mercedes driver was fined 850 hryvnias after her vehicle was damaged as a result of driving into a pothole (bump) in the road. The court ruled that the woman "was not attentive enough" to what was happening on the road and did not correctly assess the road conditions.

The case, also reported by Times of Ukraine and Реальна Війна, was presented on many of the channels under the headline "Absurdity of the Day". In channels like Ху Київ +, the ruling was labeled as absurd, as it shifts the responsibility for poor road maintenance directly onto the driver.

Additional sources, among them Батальйон «Монако» and Всевидящее ОКО, emphasized that according to the judge's decision, the driver failed to "take into account the traffic situation," and because of this, the fine was imposed on her. Similar details about the case, which occurred according to some reports in Kolomyia, also appeared on the UA Stream channel.

It is worth noting that the reporting channels, which are generally identified with a distinct pro-Ukrainian line, chose to highlight the case as an example of public frustration with the country's legal and infrastructure system, while presenting a contradiction between the driver's duty of care and the poor state of the roads.
