Wave of arrests in Turkey: Journalist Rasim Ozan Kütahyalı arrested in illegal gambling case
Turkish law enforcement authorities have launched a nationwide operation against illegal gambling and money laundering networks. According to reports in TRT Haber, the operation spanned 21 provinces and led to the exposure of illegal proceeds totaling 100 billion Turkish lira and 2 billion US dollars. Within this framework, journalist Rasim Ozan Kütahyalı was arrested at his home in Istanbul.
The investigation revealed an extensive network of participants, including, according to GündemX reports, ten key figures in the financial and legal systems, including three bank managers, eight police officers, and four lawyers. In addition, state authorities appointed a receiver for three electronic payment companies, three jewelry stores, and a currency exchange office, and seized 221 real estate assets and 120 vehicles.
Turkish Minister of Justice, Akın Gürlek, clarified that the government is working to tighten legislation: "We are working to make illegal gambling a criminal offense for the gamblers themselves as well." According to Gürlek, the goal is to "drain the swamp" of the digital gambling and drug industry that threatens the country's youth.
In parallel to this affair, İhlas Haber Ajansı reported on developments in the Aziz İhsan criminal organization case, in which the prosecution requested prison sentences of 4 to 12 years against several mayors, including the mayors of Adana and Ceyhan, for involvement in bribery offenses. Additionally, Haber Gündem reported on the arrest of 1,187 suspects in drug cases in 77 different provinces across Turkey in the last two weeks.
