[60830] Turbulent Start to the Iranian Second Division Season and Appointment of a New Olympic Team Coach
Failures in the Start of the Iranian Second Division
After a 76-day hiatus, the Iranian football league returned to activity, but according to the Esteghlal Fans Channel (کانال هواداران استقلال), the return was accompanied by "disorder and exceptional events." Most notable is the technical victory of the 'Niroo-ye Zamini' team over 'Damash Gilan' with a score of 3-0, after the latter failed to appear for the match, as reported in this report. As a result, Damash remains with only 10 points at the bottom of the table.
At the same time, severe logistical difficulties were discovered in other teams. The Esteghlal Fans Channel reported that the 'Nod Urmia' team arrived for the match with a strange squad that included four goalkeepers, while its opponent, 'Shenavarsazi Qeshm', arrived at the game without any prior team training.
Hossein Abdi Appointed as Olympic Team Coach
On the national front, the Iranian Football Federation announced the appointment of Hossein Abdi as the coach of the Olympic team, replacing Omid Ravankhah. The stated goal is "to end a 52-year wait" and qualify for the Olympics, a task defined as "impossible" due to a sequence of previous failures.
According to the analysis by the Esteghlal Fans Channel, Abdi has several advantages, most notably "a deep familiarity with the generation of players," whom he previously coached in the youth teams. At the same time, he faces significant challenges, including preparation for the Asian Games in Nagoya in September and the need to rehabilitate the team's status following poor performances in recent tournaments. A significant advantage mentioned is the end of "managerial division," as the team is now managed under the federation alone without the intervention of the Olympic Committee.
