[58317] Storm in the Constitution Committee: Bill to establish a State-National Commission of Inquiry is being promoted
The struggle over the establishment of the Commission of Inquiry into the October events
A stormy discussion is taking place in the Knesset Constitution Committee regarding the bill to establish a "State-National Commission of Inquiry" to examine the October massacre. The initiator of the bill, MK Ariel Kallner, clarified that the changes to the bill's wording were made with the aim of "refining the purpose" and ensuring a thorough and independent investigation that prevents a cover-up, this according to Amit Segal.
During the discussions, MK Ariel Kallner explained that in the event of a lack of cooperation in appointing the commission members, the State Comptroller will be authorized to appoint the remaining members. The committee chairman, MK Simcha Rothman, reinforced these points and noted that the goal is to reach a broad consensus, but acknowledged that there are "mechanisms to prevent non-cooperation" if necessary according to Knesset Channel 99.
Conversely, the opposition is harshly criticizing the conduct of the discussions. MK Gilad Kariv attacked the coalition's intention to advance the bill to a first reading within two weeks, calling the discussion "unprofessional and not serious." In addition to the discussions on the Commission of Inquiry, claims were also raised regarding the splitting of the Attorney General's role, a subject that drew criticism from parties who are critical of the way the committee is managed by Rothman.
The discussions are focusing on the question of whether the bill indeed provides tools for an independent investigation, as MK Kallner claims, or if it is a political attempt that is provoking the opposition representatives' resistance at Zirat HaHadashot.
