[56975] Political storm in the Turkish CHP party over bribery allegations
Storm in Turkey: Suspicion of a one-million-euro bribe in the CHP party
A serious political corruption scandal is preoccupying the political system in Turkey, following the testimony of former Antalya Mayor, Muhittin Böcek, who is currently under arrest. According to Haber Gündem, in the indictment based on his testimony to the prosecutor's office, Böcek claimed that his son reported to him a demand that came directly from the party chairman, Özgür Özel, for a payment of "one million euros" in exchange for the party's support for his candidacy.
The affair has sparked sharp reactions within the ranks of the CHP. Cemal Enginyurt, a member of the party, launched a scathing attack against Böcek, calling him an "insect" (a play on his name), and wondered how he dares to slander the party while he himself is accused in the affair. This was reported in DoğruHaber, which is identified with a critical line towards opposition parties.
At the same time, a legal-public debate has developed around the question of whether this constitutes a bribe. Journalist Şaban Sevinç, who is affiliated with the CHP, tried to defend the move in DoğruHaber by arguing that "even if a million euros were left at the CHP headquarters, this is a donation to the party." Sevinç argued that technically it is not a criminal bribe since the transaction was not carried out with a public servant in the narrow sense, but rather supposedly as political assistance—a definition that received criticism as "political bribery" within the same reports.
