[56288] Senior Iranian government officials: Working to restore the internet to its previous state despite the security situation
The Iranian administration signals a change in approach regarding internet restrictions
In light of the growing criticism over the network shutdown, senior officials in the Iranian government declared today, May 11, 2026, that they are working to restore international internet access to its normal state. Afshin, Vice President for Science and Technology, emphasized that disconnecting the internet severely harms the country's scientific ranking and makes it difficult for researchers and students to conduct international research. According to him, "disconnecting the internet is just erasing the problem" and not an effective solution, as it does not prevent hostile actions as proven in the past.
At the same time, the state news agency IRNA reports that the government has established a special task force under the supervision of the First Vice President, in cooperation with the Ministry of Communications, with the goal of formulating "decisive decisions" to resolve the crisis. Other officials, including the Deputy Director of Communications in the President's Office, promised the public that with the end of the sensitive security situation, internet services will return to normal and even improve.
The business sector joined these calls, as a senior official at the Iran Chamber of Commerce clarified that he opposes the policy of shutting down networks as a permanent solution during a crisis and called for implementing lessons from other countries. The current discourse in the government, which is also reflected in official support channels such as the Pezeshkian supporters channel, indicates an attempt to moderate the digital restrictions imposed under the state of war.
