Widespread wave of arrests of Shiite clerics in Bahrain

Political and religious tension is evident in Bahrain following reports of a widespread wave of arrests against Shiite clerics. The Al-Wefaq National Islamic Society, affiliated with the Shiite opposition in Bahrain, accused the authorities of "provocative and dangerous escalation" and claimed that more than 40 clerics had been arrested in recent days. The organization called for international intervention and claimed that this is part of a broader policy of stripping citizenship and suppressing the country's Shiite community.

Simultaneously, the Lebanese News and Updates channel, which expresses a clear pro-Shiite stance and is critical of the Bahraini government, reported 39 confirmed arrests of religious figures, including the two sons of Sheikh Isa Qassim. The channel claimed that the detainees "did nothing" to justify the arrests, and that this is an attempt by the regime to "crush the Shiite community."

Other sources, including the Resistance Lounge channel, confirmed that arrests of Shiite religious figures had already taken place last week. A statement by Rerum Novarum // Intel, Breaking News, and Alerts noted that local organizations are demanding the establishment of a "new constitutional and social contract," claiming that the current model of government is "security-oriented and unstable."

As of now, no official response has been received from the Bahraini authorities to the claims raised in the publications, most of which come from channels identified with a critical and opposition line.
