[54015] Temporary ceasefire in Ukraine: conflicting reports on Trump's involvement and the scope of combat
Ceasefire in the shadow of Victory Day celebrations
Over the last few days, a ceasefire was reported between Russia and Ukraine to mark the 81st Victory Day, which began on May 8 and will continue, according to various estimates, until May 10 or 11. While the Russian Ministry of Defense declared a halt to military activity to mark the holiday, as reported in Geopolitics Watch (which takes a critical stance toward all parties involved), artillery exchanges and the use of drones were recorded on the ground, albeit without long-range attacks.
Donald Trump announced an initiative for a three-day ceasefire (May 9-11), including an exchange of 1,000 prisoners per side, a move that received official confirmation from Kremlin advisor Yuri Ushakov, as noted in Defense Politics Asia. However, the interpretation of the move varies among different Telegram channels: while some see it as a diplomatic breakthrough, channels like 🇦🇺Land Down Under🇦🇺 (which is critical of Trump) argue that the former president is "taking credit for something Putin had already declared."
At the same time, the channel Марципановый Ликёр (characterized by a critical stance toward all involved leaders) claimed that this is an arrangement defined in the markets as an "official ceasefire," despite the history of similar violations in the past. The sources note that Russia threatened a "massive missile attack" on Kyiv should the parade activity in Moscow on May 9 be harmed, which highlights the fragility of the current ceasefire.
