Involvement of religious officials in the Iranian national team: Debate over participation in the World Cup
In a series of reports published recently, it emerges that there is internal disagreement among government echelons in Iran regarding the national soccer team's participation in the World Cup tournament. Abdolhossein Khosrow-Panah, Secretary of the Supreme Council of the Cultural Revolution, revealed in a public speech that "some of the officials in charge of sports opposed participating in the World Cup."
According to reports by Iran International and Iran International Sport, which are known for consistently criticizing the Iranian regime's conduct, Khosrow-Panah noted that he advocated for a firm position on the matter: "I said that if America closes the door, we must enter through the window. We must participate." Similar remarks were also published by Akharin Khabar, an internal Iranian media outlet, which quoted Khosrow-Panah emphasizing that the goal is for "the Iranian flag to fly high."
The reports indicate that last week, Khosrow-Panah and Deputy Minister of Sports, Mohammad-Hossein Hassan-Khani, visited the soccer team's training session. The two met with the team's coach, Amir Ghalenoei, and the players. The purpose of the visit, as presented by the Ministry of Sport of the Islamic Republic, was to strengthen the connection between the religious establishment and professional sports echelons.
The direct involvement of senior religious figures within the training complex is drawing significant public attention, as social media networks identified with the Iranian opposition examine the depth to which the government seeks to use sports as a tool to demonstrate international presence, despite internal opposition.
