[53995] Fear of an environmental disaster: Massive oil spill near Kharg Island in Iran
Mysterious oil spill near Kharg Island in Iran
According to reports by Iran International, which rely on the AP news agency, a large-scale oil spill has been identified in the western area of Kharg Island, which serves as the central export hub for Iranian crude oil. According to the words of Ami Daniel, CEO of Windward, the spill began on Tuesday and is estimated at about 80,000 barrels of oil. Satellite imagery published by Epoch Times Persian and Payam Iran indicates an oil slick covering tens of square kilometers.
While the source of the spill remains controversial, there is significant tension surrounding the incident. Iran International quotes Musa Ahmadi, chairman of the Energy Committee in the Majlis, who claimed that "so far, no official report has been received" confirming the event. Conversely, opposition sources such as Payam Iran argue that the spill may be related to naval warfare in the region or intentional actions by the regime due to oil storage shortages, and they warn that the slick is moving rapidly toward the shores of Qatar.
At the same time, unverified reports in Payam Iran point to increasing tension in the Persian Gulf, including claims regarding U.S. Navy operations to intercept Iranian oil tankers as part of a maritime blockade. Sources identified with the Iranian opposition maintain that attacks and incidents involving tankers are leading to loss of life and environmental damage, while authorities in Tehran and the Pentagon maintain ambiguity and have not officially responded to claims regarding attacks or direct involvement in the oil damage.
