US demands for a new nuclear deal with Iran revealed
US administration officials presented the Wall Street Journal with a series of strict requirements that, according to them, constitute the "red lines" of the United States for any future deal with Iran, reports Amichai Stein | The Diplomatic Channel.
According to the report, the demands include an absolute ban on uranium enrichment for 20 years, the handover of all enriched material in Tehran's possession (including levels of 20% and 60%), and the complete dismantling of nuclear facilities in Fordow, Natanz, and Isfahan. In addition, Iran is required to formally declare that it does not aspire to nuclear weapons, to ban all underground nuclear activity, and to agree to tight inspection mechanisms, including "immediate inspections on demand" and penalties for violations as noted by Amichai Stein.
Asaf Rosenzweig, Big World News adds that under this outline, Iran would be required to gradually open the Strait of Hormuz in exchange for the lifting of the naval blockade and the gradual removal of economic sanctions, depending on its compliance with the terms of the agreement. It should be noted that this channel presents a perspective reporting on the diplomatic complexity regarding Iran.
However, US officials noted to Asaf Rosenzweig that "it is likely that Tehran will oppose all of these demands," which indicates deep gaps in the parties' readiness to reach significant agreements in the short term.
