During the night between May 5 and May 6, 2026, the Armed Forces of Ukraine carried out a prolonged and large-scale strike operation deep inside Russian territory. According to reports from the 23rd Separate Mechanized Brigade, "Flamingo" (F-5 Flamingo) attack UAVs traveled a distance of over 1,500 kilometers to strike military targets in the city of Cheboksary.

The primary target that sustained a direct hit is the "VNIIIR-Progress" plant, which specializes in the production of relay protection systems, automation equipment, and military electronics. According to the 23rd Mechanized Brigade, the plant served as a critical supply artery for the Russian Navy, the missile industry, aviation, and armored forces involved in the war against Ukraine. These sources, which are clearly aligned with the Ukrainian military establishment, defined the operation as "long-range sanctions" in response to Russian bombardments of Ukrainian cities.

The Ukrainian Telegram channel Труха⚡️Україна, which maintains a distinct pro-Ukrainian stance, quoted Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, who confirmed the use of "Flamingo" technology in the strike. In his statement, Zelenskyy emphasized that "Russia must end its war and move toward realistic diplomacy," noting that Ukraine has already submitted its proposal for ending the hostilities.

Simultaneously with reports of operational success, social media networks close to Ukraine claimed that Russia's air defense systems in Cheboksary failed in their mission, alleging that UAVs struck houses or sustained secondary damage as a result of Russian electronic warfare system interference.
