[51398] Approval of new credit scheme for small businesses in India sparks political debate
The government approves a new assistance plan for the MSME sector
Indian Prime Minister, narendramodi, announced today, May 5, 2026, the cabinet's approval of the Emergency Credit Line Guarantee Scheme (ECLGS) 5.0. According to Modi, the move reflects the "government's commitment to supporting businesses in India, especially the MSME sector" (Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises) during a period of global economic uncertainty. The plan is intended to facilitate the flow of additional credit to these businesses through strong guarantee coverage.
Criticism from the opposition regarding economic policy
On the other hand, chulbuli_taniya, a social media user representing a critical position opposed to the administration, claims that the government's previous economic policy is what led to the difficult situation businesses found themselves in to begin with. In a post she published, chulbuli_taniya argued that previous measures such as "demonetization, the mess surrounding GST, and the devastation of the lockdowns" are the primary causes of the current crisis.
The criticism focuses on the question of whether the new guarantee scheme is indeed a substantive solution, or if it is merely another attempt to provide "new guarantees on old bad debts." According to the critic, the sector needs "real reforms" and not just more versions of financial assistance programs that deepen the dependence on credit.
