The printer storm: Users report remote blocking
On May 5, 2026, reports of a controversial policy by printer manufacturers were circulated on social media. According to WallStreetApes, an account known for criticizing corporations and the economic system in the U.S., a user found herself blocked from printing in her private home after the device she purchased demanded a monthly payment of $7.50. WallStreetApes quoted the user as saying: "They turned off my printer remotely until I pay $7.50 to print in my own house."
The report sparked a wave of angry reactions from other surfers. The channel Honker0, which presents a critical stance toward corporations, called the move "corporate greed" and called on the public to "find old printers and refill the cartridges themselves" according to Honker0.
Within the public debate, different voices also surfaced. Some surfers argued that the new business model, which includes a monthly payment for ink services, is "fairly reasonable compared to buying ink separately." However, consumers complain about a lack of transparency and that the devices become completely disabled without the subscription, even when the consumer has already purchased the printer, paper, and ink independently.
Additional users pointed to built-in frustration with the system. One commenter noted that he was forced to throw away a specific printer and switch to another brand after paying $60 for ink cartridges that dried out in just a few weeks, which forced him to purchase additional sets at high costs according to MindfulWarrior7.
