[50630] Escalation in the Persian Gulf: Exchange of fire in the Strait of Hormuz and disagreements over the 'Freedom Project'
Rising tensions in the Strait of Hormuz: The West and Iran at a boiling point
The tension in the Persian Gulf has reached a new peak following the initiative of US President Donald Trump, known as the "Freedom Project", which is intended to ensure the passage of oil tankers in the Strait of Hormuz. The Wall Street Journal notes that the US is examining military steps against Iran following what is defined as a "violation of the ceasefire" by Tehran, while CNN describes the situation on the ground as "chaotic" and warns of the collapse of diplomatic contacts.
On the other hand, the IRNA news agency, which is identified with the Iranian regime, rejects the Western narrative of threats and claims that the American initiative has failed strategically. Official sources in Tehran even claim that "no vessel enters or leaves the straits without the approval of the Revolutionary Guards." In an additional domestic report, which is identified with the official line of the Revolutionary Guards, it is claimed that the US did not attack speedboats, but rather fired at two civilian cargo boats, an incident that they claim led to the death of five civilians.
Meanwhile, the Iranian Foreign Minister, Abbas Araghchi, called on the US and the UAE not to fall into the "trap" of hostile elements and claimed that a political crisis has no military solution. Republican Senator Lindsey Graham, known for his hawkish positions against Iran, suggested for his part providing armament to Iranian citizens to lead to an internal uprising against the regime.
In the internal political arena, Iranian Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf declared that "a new equation is being created in the Strait of Hormuz," and added in a threatening tone: "We have not even started yet." Analysts in the West, as quoted in Bloomberg, believe that the current American steps constitute an acknowledgement that the blockade imposed by Iran no longer allows for waiting for a quiet diplomatic solution.
