[50177] Another collapse in the Iranian Rial: The dollar crossed the 190,000 Toman threshold
The Iranian economy is suffering another blow with a sharp drop in the value of the local currency and the breaking of new negative records in the free market.
The fall of the Iranian Rial: Record rates in the free market
On Monday, May 4, 2026, the Iranian economy experienced another shock when the US dollar exchange rate in the free market crossed the 190,000 Toman threshold. According to a report by the Vahid Online channel, known as a comprehensive update hub on events in Iran, the negative trend also hit European currencies; the Euro was traded at 223,000 Toman and the British Pound soared to 257,600 Toman.
The Iran International channel, which is affiliated with the Iranian opposition and extensively covers the country's economic failures, reported that the UAE Dirham surpassed the 52,000 Toman threshold. The channel added that as early as the early morning hours, even before the official opening of the trading day, online money changers reported prices higher than 190,000 Toman per dollar.
In an additional report by Al-Arabiya Persian, which presents a critical line toward the regime in Tehran, it was claimed that during Monday the price even crossed the 191,000 Toman level. These data were verified by other local channels such as NabzeEghtesadd and Payam Iran, which noted the situation as a new historical high.
It appears this is a direct continuation of the ongoing currency crisis in Iran. While officials in Tehran refrain from commenting frequently on fluctuations in the free market, reports from all sources point to a rapid erosion in the purchasing power of the Iranian public.
