Gulf Tensions: Revolutionary Guards Warn Against Maritime Activity Contrary to Their Guidelines

Tensions in the Strait of Hormuz are rising after Iran's Revolutionary Guards announced the definition of a new "smart control zone" in the waters between Iran and the United Arab Emirates. According to DW Persian, this area extends between Mount Mubarak and Fujairah in the south, and between Qeshm Island and Umm Al-Quwain in the west.

The Iranian announcement was released against the backdrop of US President Donald Trump's announcement of Operation "Project Freedom" to ensure the safe passage of vessels in the strait. DW Persian notes that US Central Command (CENTCOM) is supporting this mission with a deployment including destroyers, dozens of aircraft, and approximately 15,000 troops.

In response, the spokesperson for the Revolutionary Guards, Hossein Mohebbi, stated that "no change in the management of the Strait of Hormuz has occurred," but emphasized that any maritime movement that does not comply with the protocols of the Revolutionary Guards Navy will face "serious risks." As reported by Iran International, Mohebbi threatened that "ships that violate the procedures will be seized by force," and instructed shipping and insurance companies to operate in accordance with the organization's notices.

In addition, the Revolutionary Guards spokesperson denied American claims regarding recent vessel movements, calling the reports from Washington "false and baseless." Official media in Iran, including the IRNA News Agency, echoed the message that Iran is the party managing the strait, and that any ship that deviates from the approved routes will endanger its safety.
