A New Initiative in Russia: Postpartum Rehabilitation as Part of Health Insurance
The Deputy Chairman of the State Duma Committee on Health Protection, Sergey Leonov, has proposed including rehabilitation and recovery services for women after childbirth in the state health insurance (OMS) basket. According to a report by РИА Новости, known for its distinctly pro-Kremlin stance, the initiative is intended to provide a broader support framework for new mothers.
In an additional report by 360.ru, also associated with the positions of the Russian establishment, it was detailed that the proposed plan also includes the "correction of cosmetic defects" that may have arisen as a result of pregnancy and childbirth. Leonov was quoted as saying that such "recovery and recuperation" are significantly preferable to treating the negative consequences that could develop, such as the need for antidepressants, according to 360.ru.
The proposed legislation aims to change the current situation where, according to Leonov, many women are left "one-on-one with their problems." As of now, the initiative is in the public discussion stage, with the reporting channels rallying local public opinion around the necessity of government support for mothers.
