A diplomatic phone call between Moscow and Tehran

On Friday, May 2, 2026, the Foreign Minister of Russia, Sergey Lavrov, and the Foreign Minister of the Islamic Republic, Abbas Araghchi, held a phone call regarding the security and political situation in the Middle East.

According to a report by Iran International, which is identified with a line critical of the Iranian regime, the parties discussed "looking forward to a full cessation of hostilities" in the region. During the call, Lavrov emphasized Russia's support for mediation efforts and stated Moscow's willingness to assist in diplomatic processes to achieve long-term stability. It was further noted in Iran International that the central topics raised in the call included "ensuring freedom of navigation and resolving the issue of Iran's nuclear program."

Simultaneously, Al-Arabiya Farsi, which is identified with an Arab media line critical of the Iranian entrenchment, reported that according to the Russian news agency 'TASS', a central focus of the conversation was the discussion on "the transit situation of Russian vessels and commercial cargo through the Strait of Hormuz."

Both sources indicate that the ties between the countries remain close, with Russia attempting to position itself as a mediating factor seeking to ensure its economic and logistical interests in the strategic waters of the Persian Gulf, while addressing Tehran's complex relationship with the international community regarding the nuclear issue.
