Massive air attack on Kyiv: Between claims of civilian casualties and Russian definitions as "retaliation"

During the night between July 1 and July 2, 2026, Ukraine, and primarily the capital Kyiv, experienced a combined and intensive air attack. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy reported via the gdh channel that Russia launched over 70 missiles and approximately 500 unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs). According to Ukrainian reports, the attack claimed the lives of 13 people and wounded over 90 others. Zelenskyy emphasized that air defense is currently the "most critical priority," noting that Kyiv is awaiting decisions from the U.S. regarding Patriot systems and the joint production of ballistic missiles.

On the other hand, the Russian Ministry of Defense, as reported by the Sputnik Türkiye agency, presented a completely different narrative. Moscow defined the operation as a precise "retaliatory strike," aimed solely at military facilities and energy infrastructure, and claimed it acted with "surgical precision" to avoid harming civilians. The channel affiliated with the Kremlin's position noted that strategic targets were destroyed, including assembly facilities for companies like "Antonov" and the Kyiv Radio Plant, as well as sites for the production of control systems for UAVs and missiles.

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov stated via Sputnik Türkiye that the pressure on Kyiv's leadership "will continue to increase until the objectives are achieved." Peskov reiterated the Russian claim that the military only strikes military targets, and added sharp criticism toward the European Union and the legitimacy of Zelenskyy's government.

Simultaneously, additional reports from Gündem Analiz raised claims from the Ukrainian General Staff regarding Russian intentions to expand the campaign to ground invasion operations, citing possible attack plans from the direction of Belarus or the Bryansk region. The situation on the ground remains tense, as residents of Kyiv were forced to spend the night in metro stations due to the intensity of the fire.
