A surge in vegetable prices and a forecast for the fruit season in Ukraine

On social media in Ukraine, the claim that tomato prices have soared to a level where their cost per kilogram is higher than the price of a bottle of vodka is stirring up the public. This was reported by Telegram channels Times of Ukraine, Україна Online, Україна⚡️Новини⚡️Війна, and УКРАЇНА⚡️Новини ⚡️Політика. The reports, which reflect a stormy public discourse regarding the cost of living, highlight the consumer shock in the face of current food costs.

On the other hand, Member of Parliament (Rada) from the "Servant of the People" party, Solomchuk, provided in a live broadcast to Новини.LIVE a more optimistic forecast. According to him, starting June 15, a significant price reduction is expected for strawberries and cherries, which are expected to cost about 80 Hryvnia per kilogram. He explained that current high prices are mainly due to the fact that the season has not yet begun and that the market is currently relying on imports. He further added that unlike last year, when spring frost damaged the crop, a rich harvest is expected this year, which will lead to price stability.

At the same time, UA Stream notes that the trend of lower prices has already begun on the ground. According to the update, farmers are currently offering greenhouse strawberries in the price range of 170–230 Hryvnia per kilogram, a 14% decrease compared to the previous work week. The channel emphasizes that the supply of strawberries from growers in Western Ukraine is on a steady upward trend.
