[69530] The housing crisis in Ukraine: a surge in real estate prices in major cities and cases of fraud
The housing crisis and real estate scams in Ukraine: a snapshot
Housing prices in major cities in Ukraine have reached new peaks, making home ownership an almost unattainable goal for the average citizen. According to data from OLX as reported by Times of Ukraine, about 8 to 9 years of full savings from the entire monthly salary are required to purchase a one-room apartment in cities such as Kyiv, Lviv, Uzhhorod, and Chernivtsi. Additional channels such as Kyiv Info and Truha Kyiv reinforce this assessment, noting that assuming an average salary is approximately 31,000 hryvnia, impossible economic planning is required for a person working alone.
In Kyiv Holovne and Livyi Bereh Kyiv, it is emphasized that this figure is only accurate if all other living expenses are paid by another party, which highlights the depth of the economic crisis in the Ukrainian housing market. In UA Stream, they described the prices in Lviv as "prices for billionaires," which reflects the growing public frustration in the face of the cost of living.
Alongside the difficulties of housing accessibility, Київ | Times reported on a serious criminal fraud attempt: a group of people tried to take over two apartments and a parking space owned by an Azerbaijani citizen in Kyiv and Uzhhorod, with a total value of over 21 million hryvnia. The suspects forged notarized powers of attorney from Monaco, but the police and the prosecutor's office managed to stop the sale and place liens on the properties before the takeover was completed.
