The OpenRouter platform has announced the blocking of access to leading artificial intelligence services for users with Russian accounts, as part of new restrictions on the use of American technology.
Sweeping ban on AI tools in Russia
Users with accounts registered in Russia are expected to lose access to the Application Programming Interfaces (APIs) of the world's leading artificial intelligence tools, including ChatGPT, Claude, and Gemini. According to a report by the Times of Ukraine channel, which maintains a distinct pro-Ukrainian and anti-Russian line, the language model access platform 'OpenRouter' has updated its rules to prohibit users with Russian accounts from using these American technologies in their projects.
The news was also confirmed by the Україна Сьогодні | Новини channel, which reported that according to OpenRouter, the company is enforcing a new policy prohibiting the use of American artificial intelligence services for users identified with the Russian Federation.
The move is part of a tightening of controls on technology exports and restrictions on access to advanced technological tools in Russia, as noted by the Times of Ukraine. As of now, there has been no official response from the artificial intelligence companies themselves regarding the exact scope of enforcement, but the trend marks a further expansion of technological sanctions on the country.
