[54584] Assessment in Ukraine: Russia is expected to focus its next energy attacks on the west of the country
The head of the Mykolaiv Regional Military Administration, Vitaliy Kim, warns of a change in the Russian attack strategy against energy infrastructure in Ukraine.
Warning against attacks on energy infrastructure in western Ukraine
The head of the Mykolaiv Regional Military Administration, Vitaliy Kim, issued a strategic warning today (May 10, 2026) that Russia's next waves of attacks against the Ukrainian energy grid are expected to concentrate on the west of the country. According to Kim, areas close to the front lines are already well-defended and manage to intercept a high percentage of targets, so he estimates that "they will strike where they are not prepared."
Reports on Kim's remarks were distributed in several Ukrainian Telegram channels reporting on the war:
- Труха⚡️Україна (tending towards distinctly pro-Ukrainian positions) noted in its message that this is an operational assessment by Kim, and emphasized the importance of renewed preparation in the western regions.
- 🇺🇦УКРАЇНА⚡️Новини ⚡️Політика reiterated the comments and highlighted the expected nature of the attack as "massive attacks" on the power grid.
- Інформаційний фронт | Новини | Політика also noted that the future focus of Russian strikes may shift from the front to the western rear, which until now has been considered more protected relative to the combat zones.
This assessment comes against the backdrop of ongoing attempts by Russia to damage Ukraine's energy stability throughout the war, with the tactical shift noted by Kim highlighting the need to strengthen air defense systems even in areas further away from the direct centers of fighting.
