Violent kidnapping incident in Lviv surrounding recruitment procedures

During yesterday, May 9, 2026, a serious incident occurred in Lviv that shocked the country: a 43-year-old man threatened the life of a 13-year-old girl with a knife after encountering a patrol from the Recruitment Office (TCC) and the police. According to reports from the National Police, circulated among others by Реальна Війна | Україна | Новини, the suspect sprayed tear gas at security forces and then grabbed the minor and held a knife to her throat. The girl was rescued unharmed by police and recruitment forces, and the suspect was arrested.

Reports in the Ukrainian media confirm that the incident took place on Kavaleridze Street. Media outlets such as Львівич | Новини and ТСН новини / ТСН.ua note that the suspect acted out of a desire to evade a routine document inspection by recruitment authorities. Оперативний ЗСУ added that the suspect faces criminal charges for unlawful imprisonment, where the maximum penalty for this offense could reach five years of imprisonment.

While most media outlets reported the case as a crime against a minor, the ГНАП channel, which displays a more critical line toward state recruitment mechanisms, cast doubt on the circumstances and noted that in the absence of body camera footage, it is possible the story was disseminated by the authorities for propaganda purposes, or alternatively – a result of the heavy social pressure surrounding violent recruitment practices, as claimed by Member of Parliament Алексей Гончаренко in his criticism regarding the lack of necessary reforms.
