Severe heat wave in Ukraine: The hottest country in Europe

On Wednesday, May 7, 2026, Ukraine experienced an unusual rise in temperatures, with meteorological factors defining it as the "hottest country in Europe." According to ТСН новини, temperatures across the country reached a peak of about 30 degrees Celsius. At the same time, the Київ Головне channel warned that while about 30 degrees were measured in the shade, temperatures in the sun could reach 50 degrees, leading to calls for the public to drink plenty of water and avoid direct exposure to the sun.

The effects of the heat are evident on the operational and environmental levels. ProKyiv warned of a "very high risk of fire" in the Kyiv region, due to the dry weather conditions. At the same time, the UA Stream channel reported fires covering thousands of dunams in the north of the country, caused by Russian activity, and noted that rescue forces are finding it difficult to control the fire due to the current conditions.

Despite the heavy heat, meteorologists anticipate a change in the trend soon. Суспільне Львів reported a forecast for partly cloudy weather and light rain in the Lviv region, while Новини.LIVE detailed the varying temperatures between different districts, from 22 to 29 degrees. UA Stream notes that towards the weekend (May 9–10) a drop of about 3 to 5 degrees in temperature is expected, accompanied by rain and thunderstorms, which will bring some relief from the current heat load.
