Today, Ukraine marks Infantry Day, dedicated to the fighters who form the backbone of the army in the struggle against the Russian invasion.
On May 6, 2026, Ukraine marks Infantry Day, a date commemorating the heroism of fighters in mechanized, infantry, and assault units. The date was chosen to commemorate the Cossack victory at the Battle of Yellow Waters (Zhovti Vody) in 1648, as noted on Pravda Gerashchenko.
Senior officials in the Ukrainian security establishment issued extensive messages of appreciation. The Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, Oleksandr Syrskyi, emphasized that his top priority is preserving the lives of the fighters through the integration of advanced technologies, including drones and unmanned systems, to reduce the exposure of the infantry. According to him, "The line between good and evil runs where our infantry has dug in."
Commander of the "Madyar's Birds" drone unit, Madyar, clarified in a powerful message: "Until an infantry soldier enters a position – it is not ours, regardless of the number of enemies eliminated." The Ukrainian Ministry of Defense, in its official Telegram account, summarized the prevailing perception among military echelons: "The final point in every battle is placed by the infantry."
Alongside the words of praise, there is also awareness of the challenges on the ground. UA Stream referred to the complexity of the fighting in 2026, noting the fact that fighters are dealing not only with a manpower shortage but also with a lack of frequent rotations, which intensifies the attrition in the ranks. Combat brigades, including the 93rd Brigade and the 23rd Brigade, emphasized that the infantry are the "backbone of the army" upon whose shoulders rests the fate of the entire front.
