Dramatic Development in the Middle East: USA and Iran Open a Round of Talks in Switzerland
In the shadow of rising regional tensions, official delegations from the United States and Iran have gathered in Switzerland for decisive discussions. According to Gündem Analiz, the talks are intended to implement the "Islamabad Agreement" signed on June 18, which includes 14 clauses including a ceasefire in Lebanon, the opening of the Strait of Hormuz, and the lifting of the naval blockade on Iran. Sputnik Türkiye reported that U.S. Vice President J.D. Vance is expected to join the talks, expressing optimism regarding the ability to maintain the ceasefire.
On the other hand, Tehran emphasizes that the arrival of the delegation is intended to ensure that the U.S. fulfills its commitments. Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmaeil Baghaei was quoted in Gündem Hattı saying that "delays by the U.S. increase the risks," and that Washington must act to restrain Israel's military operations in Lebanon.
In Israel, the diplomatic moves have sparked political turmoil. Opposition leader Yair Lapid attacked Prime Minister Netanyahu, claiming according to GDH that Netanyahu failed in calculating Turkey's reactions and Iran's influence. Simultaneously, Benny Gantz called for Netanyahu's resignation, placing the responsibility for the situation on him according to a GDH report.
On the American front, Vice President Vance clarified that the administration is re-examining relations with Iran, noting that "criticism of Israel is not antisemitism" – a statement intended to separate political support from criticism of the government's policies. Conversely, American journalist Tucker Carlson claimed in GDH that President Trump feels "deceived" by Netanyahu regarding the war with Iran, and therefore has turned to the diplomatic path as the only way out of the deadlock.
