Political upheaval in Turkey: Heading towards a split in the CHP?

The political system in Ankara is abuzz with assessments regarding growing tension within the Republican People's Party (CHP), the main opposition party in Turkey. According to a report by Sputnik Türkiye, close to journalist Abdülkadir Selvi, there are claims that Istanbul Mayor Ekrem İmamoğlu is working to establish a new party. Selvi analyzes the balance of power in parliament and notes that out of the 138 CHP members of parliament, about 30 are identified with Kemal Kılıçdaroğlu and 60 with Özgür Özel, while the remaining 48 are considered to be "waiting".

According to the report by Sputnik Türkiye, İmamoğlu is seeking figures with a "liberal-left" hue to establish the ideological structure of his new movement. At the same time, the channel notes that associates of Özgür Özel have begun their own organizational preparations, including renting a building in the Mustafa Kemal neighborhood in Ankara for the party's activities.

Simultaneously, the Haber Gündem channel reports on growing speculation in the halls of power in Ankara regarding the possibility of establishing a "seventh faction" in parliament. According to Haber Gündem, the tension between the camps of Kılıçdaroğlu and Özel and the impeachment proceedings within the party could change the parliamentary map significantly, which raises questions about whether the current structure of the Turkish parliament is facing a dramatic change.
