International gatherings at centers of influence
During the day (May 13, 2026), two significant diplomatic and economic initiatives taking place in the region were reported. In Turkey, TRT Haber reports that Istanbul will host the "Second International Zero Waste Forum" between June 5 and 7. The event, held under the auspices of Turkey's First Lady, Emine Erdoğan, is expected to attract representatives from over 160 countries.
According to Haber Gündem, the forum will focus on solutions for the climate crisis, the circular economy, and green financing, with the aim of contributing to the upcoming climate conference, COP31. Emine Erdoğan noted that this is a "gathering for our common home - Earth," and expressed hope for long-term collaborations.
At the same time, the KazanForum, which brings Russia together with the Islamic world, has opened in the city of Kazan, Russia. According to Sputnik Türkiye, which is aligned with the Russian government's positions and emphasizes strengthening economic ties between Moscow and Muslim countries, the forum is being held between May 12 and 17.
While the forum in Turkey focuses on environmental and sustainability initiatives as part of Ankara's public diplomacy efforts, the forum in Russia highlights the country's attempts to bypass international isolation and deepen its economic partnerships in the East and the Global South.
