Turkey bracing for inflation data: Food prices are soaring and red lines are being crossed
The Turkish public, led by retirees and civil servants, is looking toward the April 2026 inflation data, which is expected to be released by the Turkish Statistical Institute (TÜİK). According to a report by [İLKHA [İlke Haber Ajansı]](https://www.ilkha.com/guncel/emekli-ve-memurun-gozu-nisan-enflasyonunda-530073), which covers ongoing news, these sectors are waiting anxiously for the data that will form the basis for their future wage evaluations.
At the same time, Savunma Sanayi İşçileri Platformu (Defense Industry Workers Platform), which represents voices from within the organized labor sector, published economists' forecasts ahead of the index release. According to various surveys conducted among dozens of economists (AA Finans, Bloomberg HT, and ForInvest Haber), the average monthly inflation forecast hovers around 3.19% to 3.28%, with annual inflation expected to stabilize in the region of 31.11% to 31.38%.
In the social sphere, the most concerning data came from the Turkish labor union Türk-İş, which published its "hunger and poverty line" report for April 2026. According to the report by the Defense Industry Workers Platform, the "hunger line" – the monthly expenditure required for food for a family of 4 – has soared to 34,587 Turkish liras. Furthermore, the "poverty line" calculated by the union reached 112,661 Turkish liras.
The labor union emphasized in its publications that monthly "kitchen inflation" stood at 5.47%, while annual inflation in the food and kitchen sector climbed to 43.89%. These figures sharpen the gap between official economic forecasts and the actual cost of living experienced by workers in Turkey today.
