[46958] Deepening of Turkish Military Involvement in Somalia: Naval Training and Security Cooperation
Increased Turkish Military Presence off the Coast of Somalia
The Turkish Ministry of Defense has issued a report on extensive activity by its forces in the Somalia region, which includes securing energy resources and training local security forces. According to reports circulated on Son Dakika Haberler Gündem and Son Dakika Haberler Türkiye, Turkey's naval task forces are providing continuous escort and security assistance to the drilling ship "Çağrı Bey" and the support vessels "Korkut", "Altan", and "Sancar".
As part of this activity, the frigate TCG Gaziantep, together with the patrol ships TCG Bartın and TCG Bafra, conducted joint naval exercises with the participation of Somali Navy personnel. The move highlights the strategic importance Turkey places on protecting its maritime assets and strengthening Somalia's maritime sovereignty.
In addition to the naval activity, the reports point to a deepening of land-based cooperation. The channel Türk Savunma Sanayi Haberleri notes that the Turkish military is now providing professional training to the Somali Special Forces unit "Gorgor" in the operation of armored vehicles and tanks.
These sources, which are generally identified with the interests of the Turkish defense industry and the security establishment, emphasize Turkey's role as a key ally in building Mogadishu's military capabilities. The activity comes against the backdrop of increasing regional tensions in the Horn of Africa, as Turkey establishes its position as an influential power that combines the protection of economic interests with targeted military aid.
