[45771] Maritime drama in Sakarya: Dramatic rescue of a ship crew that ran aground
Maritime drama in Turkey: A complex rescue operation off the coast of Sakarya
Over the last 24 hours, several significant security and safety incidents occurred in the Sakarya province of Turkey. The main focus was a prolonged rescue operation for the crew of a cargo ship that ran aground due to extreme weather conditions.
According to reports from A Haber and İhlas Haber Ajansı, the Cameroon-flagged ship named "NINOVA" got into distress off the coast of the Karasu district. According to Haber Gündem, the rescue operation lasted about 6.5 hours, at the end of which all 8 crew members on board were rescued. Sansürsüz Medya +18 noted that in the emotional moments of the rescue's conclusion, the last crew member to be evacuated from the ship waved a Turkish flag as he was pulled to shore using cables.
At the same time, several channels, including Son Dakika Haberler Türkiye and Son Dakika Haberler Gündem, reported another tragedy in the same district: the body of a 10-year-old boy, who had gone missing after being swept away by a current while fishing, was found by local rescue forces.
The events illustrate the challenges facing Turkish rescue forces in the wake of natural disasters in the region recently.
