Aerial escalation: widespread drone attacks in Russia and Ukraine

During the night between June 18 and 19, Russia and Ukraine experienced an intensive wave of aerial attacks. The Russian Ministry of Defense reported that air defense forces intercepted and destroyed 133 Ukrainian-made drones over 12 regions in Russia, including Moscow, Crimea, and the Black Sea basin. According to the NEXTA Live channel (affiliated with pro-Ukrainian positions), the attacks included strategic targets and energy facilities, with videos on social media showing a hit at an oil refinery in Moscow.

Simultaneously, Ukraine suffered severe aerial attacks. The Odessa INFO channel reported explosions in the Zatoka and Serhiyivka areas as a result of the use of "Shahed" UAVs. In the city of Kharkiv, according to the Pravda Gerashchenko channel, an attack was carried out using guided aerial bombs (KAB) that caused damage to more than 40 residential buildings and the injury of five people, including three children.

Russian sources, including the "Dva Mayora" channel (with a distinct pro-Russian government line), claimed that the attacks in Kharkiv were aimed at logistical and military infrastructure, and caused extensive damage as a result of "fuel detonation." At the same time, the "Severny Veter" channel detailed a long list of casualties among the civilian population in Russia's border regions (Belgorod, Kursk, and Bryansk), noting that dozens of civilians were injured in drone attacks.

Volunteers from CIT, who track damage to civilian infrastructure, summarized grim data from the last 24 hours, indicating at least 17 deaths and over 100 civilian injuries on both sides of the border. There were also reports of additional isolated incidents, such as a gas explosion in a residential building in Novosibirsk, which caused casualties unrelated directly to the fighting, according to the 112 channel.

The picture emerging from the reports is one of attritional warfare, in which both sides rely increasingly on unmanned aerial vehicles for deep-strike attacks, while exacting a heavy human toll on the civilian population.
