[86912] The legendary Hip-Hop.Ru forum has been blocked in Russia; concern: potential permanent loss of the domain
Russian regulatory authorities have blocked access to one of the oldest and most influential forums in Russian hip-hop culture, a move that is causing concern among the site's administrators.
A major blockade in the Russian hip-hop community
The iconic forum Hip-Hop.Ru, which has been active since 2000, has been blocked for access in Russia. According to reports from site administrators, the move raises serious concerns not only due to current inaccessibility but also due to fears of losing the site's domain, which was paid for in advance until 2027.
Wide cultural impact
The forum is considered the cradle of the modern Russian rap scene. As noted in Осторожно, новости, the site served as a social network even before the era of social media, and prominent artists such as Oxxxymiron, Guf, and Noize MC emerged on its platform. In addition, the site was known for hosting large-scale virtual "battles" (rap competitions) that helped turn the genre into a mainstream phenomenon in Russia.
Uncertainty surrounding the reason for the blockage
As of now, the reasons for the Roskomnadzor action are unknown. While TV Rain, an opposition media outlet, highlighted the lack of an official notification regarding the grounds for the blockage, Kommersant – a newspaper sometimes perceived as more pro-government – reported that some access attempts were partially successful, indicating inconsistent enforcement.
Site administrators noted that the forum had survived similar waves of blockages in the past, particularly between 2019 and 2020, but the severity of the current situation leaves the community in doubt regarding the future of the platform.
