[83184] The Controversy Over Comparing Modern Russia to the Soviet Union: Achievements and Nostalgia
The Controversy Over Russia's Future: The Soviet Union vs. The Current Reality
An intense debate is currently taking place on Russian social media regarding the comparison between modern Russia and the Soviet Union. The pro-Russian channel Операция Z: Военкоры Русской Весны (in partnership with МИГ России) presents arguments that current Russia has surpassed the Soviet Union in various quality-of-life metrics. According to their report, the average residential space per capita jumped from 15.5 square meters in 1990 to approximately 29.5 square meters in 2024, and annual construction figures have exceeded the records of the Soviet era. It was further noted that the country has experienced a boom in the fields of technology, retail, and infrastructure.
On the other hand, the Telegram channel Каргач, which is identified with liberal-market positions and supports Putin's policies alongside an appreciation for Yeltsin's reforms, harshly criticizes Soviet nostalgia. The channel argues that "the hardships of the 90s were a necessary price for the transition from a failed Soviet economy to a free market." According to the author, without the reforms of the Yeltsin era, Russia would have become an economy resembling Venezuela, and complaints about the past are "hypocrisy from those who enjoy the fruits of the free market."
The discussion highlights a deep ideological gap. While RVvoenkor calls for the formulation of a balanced national policy that combines strategic industry with a free market to ensure the future of the Russian people, Каргач emphasizes that "true patriotism is not the justification of past errors, but the aspiration to improve people's lives in the present and future." Both sides agree on the importance of an objective look at history to avoid "ideological utopias."
