A series of drone strikes hit an oil refinery in Saratov and other infrastructure facilities in Russia, with the regional governor confirming damage to civilian infrastructure.
During May 31, 2026, a significant drone attack against energy infrastructure in Russia was reported. The focal point of the event is the Saratov oil refinery, which, according to reports from pro-Ukrainian sources such as Supernova+ and Exilenova+, sustained direct hits in several locations, including an isomerization unit. These sources note that this is the 14th to 16th attack on this facility since the beginning of the war.
The regional governor of Saratov, identified with a pro-Kremlin narrative, confirmed that a drone attack occurred and that "damage to civilian infrastructure facilities" was caused, but refrained from specifically addressing the oil refinery. Conversely, channels identified with opposition to Russia, such as ZN.UA, emphasized the strategic importance of the facility, which processes about 7 million tons of oil per year and produces "Euro-5" standard fuel.
In addition to the events in Saratov, an attack was reported against the "Lazarovo" oil pumping station in the Kirov region, which serves as a critical junction for transporting crude oil from Siberia toward Moscow and Belarus, as reported by Supernova+ and Orange East.
The reports are accompanied by sharp propaganda from both sides. While opposition and Ukrainian military channels present the attack as a strategic victory that burdens the Russian war economy, channels close to the government in Russia, such as Дмитрий Никотин, condemn the attack as an assault on civilians and accuse Ukraine of terrorist acts, while maintaining an ideological line supporting Putin and Russia.
