[76937] Massive wave of drone attacks across Russia; tensions rise over strike in Zaporizhzhia
Unprecedented wave of drone attacks in Russia and Ukraine
During the night between May 30 and May 31, 2026, extensive military activity was reported on both sides of the border. The Russian Ministry of Defense, as reported by РБК, stated that air defense systems intercepted 216 Ukrainian drones in 11 different regions and the Sea of Azov area. Among the primary targets in Russia was the refinery in Saratov, which sustained a direct hit, leading to a large fire at the site.
Simultaneously, TASS News Agency reported a drone strike on a turbine building at the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant. While Russia accused Ukraine of "nuclear terrorism," the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) expressed "deep concern" and noted that such an attack constitutes "playing with fire" and violates nuclear safety principles.
Exchange of accusations and responses
Russian sources, including the Два майора channel, claim that the Ukrainian attacks are being conducted with the assistance of artificial intelligence technology from the company "Palantir." Conversely, Ukrainian channels such as УНИАН highlighted the success in striking strategic infrastructure targets in Russia. At the same time, Russia responded with counter-attacks in the northern regions of Ukraine, including hits on factories and infrastructure in the Chernihiv and Konotop areas, as reported in Политика Страны.
Regarding the nuclear threat, Deputy Chairman of the Russian Security Council Dmitry Medvedev threatened a "symmetrical" response that would include attacking nuclear reactors in Ukraine and NATO countries, as published in Коммерсантъ. On the other hand, Ukrainian officials denied involvement in the attack on Zaporizhzhia, and Western news agencies note that this is a dangerous escalation that puts the entire region at risk of an ecological disaster.
