Hantavirus outbreak on board the MV Hondius

The cruise ship MV Hondius has arrived at the island of Tenerife in Spain after an outbreak of Hantavirus (Andes strain) was discovered on board, which in this case is transmitted between humans. According to World Health Organization (WHO) reports, 9 cases of infection have been confirmed so far, 7 of which are laboratory-confirmed, and three passenger deaths have been reported – a Dutch couple and a German citizen. The TASS news agency and other media outlets confirmed that the virus was also diagnosed in citizens who were evacuated from the ship, including a French citizen and an American citizen.

International evacuation operation

Many countries, including the USA, France, Germany, and Belgium, sent evacuation planes to bring their citizens home. According to the NEXTA Live channel, the evacuated passengers were placed under strict quarantine, while Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, Director-General of the World Health Organization, recommended a 42-day isolation period for everyone who came into contact with the ship. In an unusual move, the British military airdropped a medical team and oxygen equipment to the remote island of Tristan da Cunha, after one of the passengers who disembarked from the ship showed symptoms in an area without proper medical infrastructure.

Responses and speculations

While official bodies and international organizations maintain a calming line, claiming that "the risk to public health remains low", parties identified with a critical stance toward these institutions are raising questions. The ZERGULIO channel claimed this is "hysteria orchestrated by pharma corporations," while the "Tsargrad" television channel linked the event to various conspiracy theories on social media, while mentioning past tweets by individuals and episodes of the series "The Simpsons." At the same time, isolated cases of suspected infection were reported in Ukraine as well, in cities such as Khmelnytskyi, as noted in "Country Politics", although these are likely local cases unrelated to the ship.
