Aeroflot updates flight safety policy

The Russian airline Aeroflot has announced a significant tightening of regulations for flying with backup batteries (Power Banks) on its flights. According to reports gathering from sources such as Readovka and РИА Новости, effective today, there is a total ban on sending backup batteries in checked luggage (the cargo hold of the aircraft). From now on, passengers are permitted to carry a maximum of two batteries in their carry-on luggage only.

Restrictions on use and storage

The company has set strict technical limitations to prevent the risk of fire on the plane. According to BFM, it is forbidden to charge backup batteries during the flight, including from charging points at the seats, and it is prohibited to use them to charge other devices during critical stages of the flight – taxiing, takeoff, and landing. In addition, passengers are required to keep the bag containing the battery under the seat in front of them or in the seat pocket, and it is forbidden to place the carry-on bag with the battery in the overhead storage bin.

International standards and safety background

The decision comes against the backdrop of reports regarding incidents of smoke and safety hazards on flights. The ТАСС agency noted an incident where smoke was observed from a passenger's device on an Yekaterinburg-Istanbul flight. The channel Ну чё, народ, погнали! noted that this is an alignment with IATA and ICAO guidelines currently practiced by many airlines around the world.
