Israel Bar Association Conference Storm: Sharp Confrontation Between the Judiciary and the Political Echelon

The Israel Bar Association conference held in Eilat turned into a stormy political and legal wrestling arena. The Attorney General, Gali Baharav-Miara, sharply criticized the government in a report by Ziv Rubinstein and Dafna Liel, arguing that due to the proximity to the end of the term, a "race to eliminate democratic institutions" is taking place. Baharav-Miara also addressed the draft law, emphasizing that "the state cannot ignore the law requiring the conscription of everyone," while expressing legal reservation regarding what she defined as encouraging mass draft evasion.

Conversely, coalition Knesset members sharply attacked the holding of the conference. MK Simcha Rothman (Likud) claimed in a report by Political Arena that "if all power lies with the Attorney General, then it is indeed a regime coup," and emphasized that they are "returning power to the people." Supreme Court President, Justice Isaac Amit, used the platform to warn according to Political Arena against a "red warning light for Israeli democracy," referring to threats and harassment against judges. According to him, personal attacks are permeating the private lives of the judges and threatening the independence of the entire system.
